Prison Island – Zanzibar

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Despite its name, it was never used as a real prison for criminals.

History:

The island was originally intended to be a prison in the late 19th century during the British colonial period, but it was instead used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients.

Prison Island is home to a population of giant tortoises, some over 100 years old, originally gifted from Seychelles.

Historic Buildings:

Ruins of the old prison and quarantine station can still be explored.

Boat Trips from Stone Town:

It’s a popular half-day tour by boat from Stone Town and often combined with other nearby activities.
